Brief description of process

smss.exe is system process associated with Microsoft Windows operating system. It is called Windows Session Manager. It is executed during the startup process of Windows NT, Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista and Windows 7. Creates environment variables. Starts the kernel and user modes of the Win32 subsystem. Creates DOS device mappings. Creates virtual memory paging files. Starts winlogon.exe. After the boot process is finished, the program resides in memory and can be seen running in the Windows Task Manager. Very important system process, it could not be switched off.
